Message What is it about the Z community that sets it apart from other car communities?

I can't speak about ALL other communities, but regarding those I've experienced and observed, the Z community in general is more mature (including many of the younger members) than those surrounding cheaper cars, has less posturing and is less antagonistically competitive than the communities around comparable cars, and is more casual and friendly than fans of more expensive cars. When I started hanging out with Z folks, I was struck by their readiness to accept and help me, and the lack of bragging, puffing themselves up, putting down others. I mean, there's the usual sh!t-talking, but it's mostly in good fun.

Of course, there are exceptions to all of this, but in general, and in my actual experience with Z folks in real life, this is mostly how it's been.

Is it the aesthetics or the mechanical composition that attracts you to the Z?

Both. In the beginning, the looks of the car honestly did trigger for me all the same reactions that a hot guy does, and I still get tingly every once in a while when I unexpectedly see it. Mechanically, it's insane, but I've come to appreciate the skills of the design team; they obviously knew what they were doing. I just wish they had bigger hands to consider over there in Japan...

What makes the Z different from owning another type of hot rod?

I'll ignore the misuse of the term "hotrod" since I know what you meant. ;-)
It's the only fast car I've ever owned, so I can only imagine. I own a Z because that's what I fell in love with. For me it's about the Z's lines, its power, its history and the community.

Do you find yourself having personal relationships with others based on your shared love for the Z?

Oh, definitely - most of my current friends are "Zorks" (Z-dorks). ;-)

How would you classify the Z community? Family? Fraternity? Friends? Acquaintances?

All of the above. But those I'm close with feel almost like family, including some members I've never met in person. It seems this car attracts good people.

Does owning a Z mean more than just owning a car?

Yes, absolutely. It means being a part of this community. I often find myself thankful that, out of all the sexy cars out there, I picked a Z, because it was my ticket into this crazy lot when I didn't even know I wanted in. 8)

If you couldn't drive the Z what would you drive?

Good question. I don't like to think about that. Really, I might still just be driving my beater Sunfire.

... Naaahh, I would've found SOMEthing else I could afford that would be a more worthy recipient of my mechanical interests! But I really don't know what. I considered an RSX before the Z, but ironically it was too expensive. I'm glad it was!

Are you part of any local clubs? If so how involved are you?

Yep, I'm a member of the ZCCNV (Z Car Club of Northern VA). I usually make it to the monthly meetings, and went to the tech nights when they had them, but haven't done much else with that group as a whole. They're an odd mixture of older folks with older generation Zs and then our generally younger Z32 "clique", if you will. Many of the older guys don't seem to get us, and the cars are definitely very different animals.

Have you met any people in the Z community that have become close friends?

Most definitely.

What is it that would entice people to join the Z community?

The camaraderie is really hard to beat, and it's all around a very sexy automobile. I bought the car before I knew about the community, but had I encountered the community first, that would have been enough to make me seriously consider getting the car. =)

I was previously a aviation mechanic and avionic technician and this car is harder to work on than Aircraft.
